The Integrity of our Schools and What is at Stake
As I sit and reflect on the past week, I started thinking about our schools and the issue facing our community. Our schools are in rezoning discussions, and I recall at one of the meetings, one concerned citizen got up and was very upset-she in no way minced words when she stated she didn't want certain students at her school or in her community because they were changing the face of her community. I was very offended by her remarks-but this week my Son who is currently a Senior in high school, stated that this week alone there were 13 Fights at his school and they all involved African Americans. So now I ask myself, does this parent have a legitimate concern?

Wow, Jacqueline, you seem to be in the thick of it. It seems like there are conflicting sides though. It would be foolish to make a blanket remark that covered all African Americans and said that they are violent, so they do not deserve a good school. I do not think that you are making the case for that, but surely some do. Overall, I think we have to remember that these children, or students if you prefer, are still people and they have the same basic needs that we all have, we are or have been in conlficts. I was once in a fight with another boy in eighth grade and was punished by the school for it. It is wrong to suggest that those students should have consequences for their actions, but those consequences should be meant to teach the students.
ReplyDeleteI am afraid of the attitude that fears mingling with others because they may contaminate the culture. To be sure, some students want nothing to do with peace, maybe from upbringing or circumstances, who knows, but it is not fair to use that stick to measure every student. I know you understand this and I apologize for the lecture, I'm speaking to the choir. I look forward to more thought provoking questions in the future, Jacqueline. :)
